Improvisation in F

World Premiere by Matthew Yang via CSU Fullerton
On one particular day, I was in class and began to lose focus, spacing out, a simple idea came to me. One simply motif came presenting itself to me. I spent the remainder of that class period sketching out all the possible ways I can treat and alter the motif. The motif in question is F-G-A-Bb and ultimately became the main structure of the piece.
In every repetition, every 4 measures, and every contrasting theme, this structure is always present somewhere in the pianist’s improvisation. The purpose of this is to always bring the audience back as he continues to smoothly jolt the listener at any given moment.
I wrote it as an improvisation piece because as I was sketching out the main concept of the piece, I wanted to leave this piece as open-ended as possible. This made room for the pianist to explore and decorate the world that I have created for them. I was once told "create the world, create the city, then create the house foundation. The last thing you should be doing is decorating your house. Spend time creating it, enjoy it and bask in it." The music reflects this as much as possible. Having created the world, the city, the house and left the decorating to the pianist. It's much more enjoyable to treat this as a collaboration with the performers as opposed to having performers play a "finished product".
